about

JL Maire offers us two long compositions in which he continues his studies around Just Intonation. It is well known our devotion for this tuning to which we dedicated one of our Out of Phase sessions. And we are still surprised by the formal and conceptual possibilities that place JL Maire as one of its greatest explorers within the national scene.

It is enough to approach his work in references such as Goodness/Chords From the Elysian Fields (Audiotalia, 2019), his piece in the collaborative Synthomes (Ex-nihilo Records, 2020) or the recent Along the edge of (Sirr Records, 2020).

In Botanical melancholia, Maire develops throughout its 36min, an arid composition that could well seem to be chamber music, if it were not for the fact that it is produced with a synthesizer. You have the impression of listening to a Low Desert Drone Orchestra where the harmonics are confused with wind instruments (brass and woodwind), strings or primitive guitar artifacts, which connect with the work of renowned ensembles such as Blutwurst or composers like Yoshi Wada. A tough trip, but a good one.

On the other hand, Weedy intimacies contains beauty and openness based on shimmering harmonic mantles of great emotional tension, alternating high and deep states with the volatility of the vital twilight of the plant world. As Maire points out: "It is about listening to the plants resist".

GranBengala sublimates this reference with a package presented on delicate vegetal paper, in which, like a herbarium, the illustrations leave their mark page after page until they become disfigured. Excellent mastering by Rubén Suárez in such a delicate genre, the contemporary and minimalist drone, respecting its intertwined tones and the interactions between them. With great care with Maire's intentions.

In words of JL Maire:
